56th British
National Ploughing Championships
was held
Loseley Park, Guildford, Surrey
by kind permission of Loseley Park Estate
on
Saturday & Sunday
14th & 15th October 2006
Local Champion ploughmen and women from throughout Great Britain
travelled to Guildford, Surrey on October 14th & 15th, to compete in the British National Ploughing Championships.
Competitors included past and present British, European and World ploughing
champions and competition was fierce as ploughmen and women fought for the supreme honour of taking the British National titles and representing
their country in the 2007 World Ploughing Contest in Lithuania.
The National Young Farmers Area Champions competed on the
first day and ploughmen in the conventional and reversible classes paraded
to their plots, with the qualifying ploughmen going through to the finals on
the second day.
Classes for vintage tractor ploughing were held on the second
day, with area champions in hydraulic, trailing and classic ploughing competing
for the honour of being British National Vintage Champion and a place to
represent England in the 2007 European Vintage Ploughing Championships.
Visitors saw an
extensive trade stand area and a taste of the past supplied by steam
ploughing engines; vintage machines at work; a static
display of vintage tractors and agricultural engines; and magnificent shire
horses at work demonstrating their ploughing skills.
In contrast, top machinery firms were demonstrating their
latest, most up-to-date, powerful, multi-furrow ploughing units which can turn
over in far less than an hour what it takes the horses a day to achieve.
