WIN FOR ENGLAND PLOUGHMAN CAPS TEN
YEARS OF WORLD PLOUGHING SUCCESS.
After the torrential rain of the previous two days the
crowds turned out to see England’s John Hill become the new World Reversible
Ploughing Champion. The 43-year-old farmer from Hoylandswaine in South Yorkshire
dominated his class in the 47th World Ploughing Contest, held at the
Lincolnshire Showground on September 16th and 17th.
Winning on both stubble and grass John Hill clinched the title with an
aggregate score of 359.5 points. Twenty four points ahead of the runner up,
Switzerland’s Peter Ulrich (Massey Ferguson/Kverneland). A huge margin at this
level. Scotland’s William Morrison (John Deere/Kverneland) was third with
330.25 points.
John Hill, who ploughed with a Lemken plough and a New Holland tractor, has
now ploughed in ten World Ploughing Contests and won the World reversible title
three times in the past eight years. "My first World Contest was at
Horncastle in 1984 when I was a Young Farmer," he said after the awards
ceremony. "There’s nothing better than winning in front of a home
crowd," he added, "and being back in Lincolnshire and almost on the
same site makes this a very special occasion for me."
John’s reward for his success is the Golden Furrows Challenge Trophy
(donated by the Kverneland Plough Company) and two Lemken Perpetual Trophies,
one each for winning on stubble and grass.
England’s competitor in the World Conventional Ploughing Championship,
Geoff Fretwell, had a miserable time and finished 23rd overall. He drew a poor
stubble plot on the first day and had endless trouble with soil sticking to his
plough, finishing well out of contention for the top spot. A position from which
he was unable to recover.
The torrential rain that marred the British National Ploughing Championships,
if anything helped the World ploughmen by making the grass land slightly less
hard than it had been during practice. Even so, the random stickiness of the
soil combined with varying amounts of stone everywhere made the going difficult
for many competitors.
.75 of a point robs battling Scot of World Championship
Scotland’s ploughing brothers, Andrew and William Morrison, from Banff,
were both amongst the World ploughing medal winners.
In a nail-biting finish in the conventional ploughing class, Andrew Morrison
(Case IH/Kverneland) failed by a whisker to become the new World Champion. A
mere three quarters of a point separating him from the eventual winner, Henry
Thegen of Denmark, whose aggregate score for the two days was 337.75 points.
Henry ploughed with a Case IH tractor and Kverneland plough.
Meanwhile, in the reversible class, William Morrison (John Deere/Kverneland)
finished in third place. These results make this Scotland’s best performance
at a World Ploughing Contest so far.
Northern Ireland challenge fades
At the end of the first day Ulstermen David Gill and David Wright were lying
first and second respectively in the conventional ploughing class and it looked
as though they might land an historic double victory for Northern Ireland. But
it was not to be. David Gill eventually finishing third (335.50) and David
Wright fourth (322.75).
All 30 participating nations made it to Lincolnshire for the World Ploughing
Contest, which moves to Denmark in 2001.
